Progressive taxation as an automatic stabilizer under nominal wage rigidity and preference shocks

چکیده

Abstract Previous research has shown that in the context of a prototypical New Keynesian model, more progressive income taxation may lead to higher volatility hours worked and total output response monetary disturbance. We analytically show this business‐cycle destabilization result is overturned within an otherwise identical macroeconomy subject impulses household's utility formulation. Under continuously or linearly fiscal policy rule with symmetric‐equilibrium tax burden unchanged, increase positive level progressivity will always raise degree equilibrium nominal‐wage rigidity, thus serve as automatic stabilizer mitigates cyclical fluctuations driven by preference shocks.

Nominal Wage Rigidity as a Nash Equilibrium

I would like to thank the FCAR and the SSHRC for generous financial support, and André Kurmann, Louis Phaneuf, and seminar participants at the Université du Québec à Montréal for helpful discussions. The usual caveats apply. Abstract : Models of the microfoundations of nominal price rigidities show that in the absence of real rigidities, individual firms have strong incentives to adjust prices ...

Optimal Discretionary Monetary Policy under Downward Nominal Wage Rigidity

We study the implications for optimal monetary policy when declining nominal wages is not a viable margin for adjustment to adverse economic conditions. To this end, we develop a New Keynesian model where downward nominal wage rigidity arises endogenously. We show that the optimal policy response to changing economic conditions is asymmetric. Another important finding is that downward nominal r...

Nominal Wage Rigidity in the United Kingdom

This paper studies the degree of downward rigidity in nominal wages in the United Kingdom using micro-data. Around 9% of employees who remain in the same job from one year to the next have zero pay growth. But on investigating the causes of rigidity we ®nd that up to ninetenths can be attributed to `symmetric' causes (such as contracts and menu costs) or to error. Thus only 1% of workers have p...

Nominal and real wage rigidity: Does nationality matter?

We assess the differences in downward nominal and real wage rigidity between natives and immigrants in Portugal, using a matched employer-employee database and the International Wage Flexibility Project (IWFP) methodology. This methodology estimates a notional or counterfactual distribution that would prevail under wage flexibility and compares it to the empirical wage distribution. The estimat...

A Study of Downward Nominal Wage Rigidity in Korea

This paper examines downward nominal wage rigidity in Korea using aggregate and individual-level data. We find that the degree of downward nominal wage rigidity differs depending on the data sources used. Results from the aggregate data indicate that, on average, wages have been flexible. By contrast, evidence from the micro data suggests that nominal wages are downwardly rigid most of the time...
